Russian Attacks on Ukraine Kill Civilians, Prompting Calls for More Aid
KYIV, Ukraine – Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine, employing hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in an attack that spanned hours. The strikes, which targeted civilian areas, resulted in at least 16 fatalities and over 80 injuries, marking the most significant barrage in nearly two weeks.
Ukrainian authorities reported that the attacks involved nearly 700 drones and a significant number of ballistic and cruise missiles. This latest assault follows a pattern of almost daily strikes on civilian areas since the full-scale invasion began over four years ago. The United Nations estimates that over 15,000 Ukrainian civilians have died in these attacks.
The recent bombardment occurred shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's trip to Germany, Norway, and Italy, where he sought additional air defense systems. Ukraine is concerned about the depletion of advanced American-made systems due to the ongoing conflict and has voiced opposition to a temporary U.S. waiver on Russian oil sanctions, which it believes is funding the Kremlin's war effort.
President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Germany, Norway, and Italy for their support in bolstering Ukraine's air defenses. He also noted that some partner countries have yet to fulfill their commitments regarding military aid.
The attacks caused significant damage and casualties across Ukraine. In Kyiv, at least four people, including a 12-year-old, were killed, and over 50 were injured. The southern port city of Odesa saw nine fatalities and 23 injuries, while the Dnipro region reported three deaths and around three dozen injuries. One person was killed in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks as war crimes, emphasizing the need to hold the perpetrators accountable. Ukraine's air force reported that it intercepted or disabled the majority of incoming targets, including a large number of drones. However, some strikes did hit 26 locations.
BNN's Perspective: The ongoing conflict highlights the devastating impact of the war on civilians. While international support for Ukraine's defense is crucial, ensuring that aid reaches the front lines and is effectively utilized is paramount. The international community must continue to explore all avenues to de-escalate the conflict and protect innocent lives.
