Russia Escalates Drone Attacks on Ukraine After Peace Talks
Following recent peace negotiations, Russia launched its largest drone offensive against Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. The attack, which occurred early Sunday, resulted in the death of a woman in the Kyiv region and injured at least three others, including a child.
Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia deployed 273 drones, primarily targeting the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk regions. This surpasses the previous record of 267 drones launched on the eve of the war's third anniversary on February 23rd. The attacks came after direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul on Friday, which failed to achieve a temporary ceasefire, though an agreement was reached to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.
The overnight assault in the Kyiv region caused significant damage, with several residential buildings affected. Air defense units were active throughout the night, successfully destroying 88 drones. However, the attack also included 128 simulator drones that were lost along the way without hitting anything.
This escalation follows a separate drone attack on Saturday in the Sumy region, which killed nine civilians. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for stronger sanctions against Moscow in response to the attacks.
BNN's Perspective: The recent surge in drone attacks, particularly after peace talks, is deeply concerning. While both sides deny targeting civilians, the consistent loss of life and the targeting of civilian areas underscore the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire and a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. The international community must continue to pressure both sides to prioritize the safety of civilians and work towards a peaceful settlement.
