Russia Intensifies Attacks on Ukraine, Targeting Civilian Infrastructure

KYIV, Ukraine – Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine overnight, firing over 500 drones and two dozen missiles, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attacks, which primarily targeted civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, resulted in at least five injuries. The strikes occurred in western and central Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the attacks were demonstrative, highlighting Russia's perceived impunity. He called for stronger sanctions against Russia, citing the lack of sufficient pressure on its war economy as a key factor enabling the ongoing aggression. Zelenskyy noted an increase in Russian drone attacks, including those conducted during daylight hours, and reported a buildup of Russian forces along the front lines.

Despite attempts by U.S. President Donald Trump to mediate a ceasefire and initiate peace talks, the Kremlin has raised objections to the proposals. Zelenskyy has accepted Trump's offer for face-to-face negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, Putin recently met with leaders from China, North Korea, and India. Washington has accused these countries of supporting Russia's war effort. North Korea has provided troops and ammunition, while China and India have purchased Russian oil, indirectly bolstering Russia's economy.

Zelenskyy is actively seeking international support. He traveled to Denmark for discussions with Northern European and Baltic countries regarding military aid and diplomatic backing. British Defense Secretary John Healey also visited Kyiv to discuss strengthening Ukraine's military capabilities. Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, where European countries will assess potential postwar security guarantees, in collaboration with the United States.

BNN's Perspective: The recent escalation in attacks underscores the urgent need for a diplomatic solution. While the international community must continue to support Ukraine's defense, a sustained effort to bring all parties to the negotiating table is crucial to prevent further loss of life and destruction. The involvement of key global players in the conflict necessitates a multifaceted approach to achieve a lasting peace.
