Authors Guild Gala Honors Literary Giants: Caro, Rushdie, and Cisneros Celebrated
The Authors Guild, a prominent advocate for writers, hosted a gala in New York City on Monday night, celebrating the power of the written word and its crucial role in preserving democracy. The event honored three literary luminaries: Robert Caro, Salman Rushdie, and Sandra Cisneros, recognizing their significant contributions to literature and their unwavering commitment to free expression.
Robert Caro, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and former Guild president (1979-81), received the Preston Award for Distinguished Service to the Literary Community. In a pre-recorded video, Caro emphasized the enduring relevance of the Guild's work, highlighting that many of the challenges faced by writers decades ago persist today.
Salman Rushdie, the celebrated novelist and outspoken critic of censorship, was presented with the Champion of Writers Award. Rushdie, who survived a brutal on-stage stabbing in 2022, delivered a powerful speech, expressing concern over threats to the arts and humanities and the suppression of American history. He urged fellow writers to actively engage with the challenges of the present, drawing a parallel to Voltaire's *Candide* and questioning whether retreat or continued fight is the appropriate response to the current crisis.
Sandra Cisneros, the acclaimed fiction writer, poet, and pacifist, received the Baldacci Award for Literary Activism. Cisneros passionately described the world as "a house on fire," underscoring the urgency of the moment and the importance of literary activism.
The gala, held at Gotham Hall in midtown Manhattan and hosted by *Saturday Night Live* star Ego Nwodim, brought together over 15,000 published authors. The Authors Guild actively advocates for writers' rights, opposing book bans and addressing the impact of AI on the literary landscape. The event served as a reminder of the vital role authors play in shaping our understanding of the world and defending the principles of free expression.
