Beloved Albino Alligator Claude Dies at 30

SAN FRANCISCO – Claude, a rare albino alligator and a beloved fixture at the California Academy of Sciences, has died at the age of 30. The museum announced the passing of the alligator on Tuesday.

Claude, a popular attraction for both local children and international tourists, served as an unofficial mascot for the museum and the city. He was featured in children's books and advertisements. The museum noted that Claude possessed a quiet charisma that captivated visitors during his 17 years in San Francisco. The Academy highlighted Claude's role in connecting people with nature and fostering curiosity about the natural world.

Born in 1995 at an alligator farm in Louisiana, Claude arrived at the Academy in 2008. His albinism, a genetic mutation, gave him a white appearance and pinkish-red eyes. The museum emphasized that there are fewer than 200 albino alligators worldwide.

The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine will conduct an examination to determine the cause of death.
