Rio Rico High grad wins Pitcher of the Week honor

Abril Nerey, a 2018 graduate of Rio Rico High School now attending Park University in Gilbert, Ariz. and pitching for the schools Buccaneers softball team, was named the California Pacific Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Feb. 27.
Nerey won the award for her performances in games against Ottawa University (Ariz.) and Bethel University (Ind.). She pitched 11 innings, allowing six hits and throwing six strikeouts to lead the Buccaneers to victories in both contests. In the game against Bethel, she allowed just one hit and no walks in a complete game shutout.
Nerey is a junior at Park University, where she is majoring in early childhood education. This is her first season for the NAIA Division II Buccaneers after she transferred from Mesa Community College.
Through March 5, Nerey had a pitching record of 5-1 with one save and an ERA 1.74 in 40.1 innings. The Buccaneers were 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the eight-team California Pacific Conference.
While at RRHS, Nerey played four years of varsity basketball, softball and volleyball. As a senior, she was named the 4A Gila Region Player of the Year in softball.
