Agricultural Producer Invokes Right to Silence in EU Subsidy Probe
ATHENS – Greek agricultural producer G. Xylouris has invoked his right to remain silent during testimony before the Greek Parliament's investigative committee. The committee is currently examining issues related to EU agricultural subsidies.
Xylouris, in a statement to the committee, expressed feeling publicly humiliated for six months, along with his family, and stated he has been denied the basic right to know the accusations against him and respond. He maintained his innocence, asserting that he has not received any funds illegally and has been subject to thorough inspections.
Xylouris cited his inability to access crucial information as the reason for his silence. He stated he could not answer questions about conversations, a prosecutor's referral, a money-laundering report, and alleged evidence, all of which he has not been granted access to. He emphasized his respect for the committee and its institutional role, but asserted his right to remain silent, as guaranteed by law and the Constitution.
He further clarified that his decision was not a sign of disrespect, but a defense of his family. Xylouris stated he would present any relevant information to the competent judge when summoned. He also indicated he would not answer questions on matters unrelated to his personal involvement.
BNN's Perspective:
The situation highlights the complexities of investigations involving financial matters and the importance of due process. While the committee's work is crucial in ensuring accountability, the individual's right to a fair defense and access to information must be upheld. Striking a balance between transparency and protecting individual rights is essential for maintaining public trust in the investigative process.
