Russell Westbrook to Join Sacramento Kings

Veteran point guard Russell Westbrook is set to join the Sacramento Kings, marking his seventh NBA team. His agent, Jeff Schwartz, confirmed the agreement with ESPN. The Athletic reports that Westbrook is expected to sign a one-year deal at the minimum salary.

This upcoming season will be Westbrook's 18th in the league. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous accolades, including two All-NBA selections and nine All-Star appearances. He has also led the league in scoring twice and assists three times. Westbrook holds the NBA record for career triple-doubles.

Last season, Westbrook played 75 games with the Denver Nuggets, starting 36 of them. He averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in approximately 28 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 44.9%. While primarily a starter for much of his career, he has transitioned into a sixth-man role in recent seasons.

Westbrook, who will turn 37 next month, is still seeking his first NBA championship. He also has personal milestones within reach. He currently has 26,205 career points, placing him second all-time among point guards, behind only Oscar Robertson. Additionally, he is just 75 assists away from becoming the eighth player in NBA history to reach 10,000 assists.

Since being drafted fourth overall in 2008, Westbrook has played in 1,237 games, starting 1,075 of them. He has averaged 21.2 points, 8.0 assists, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals throughout his career. He won the MVP award in 2016-17 while playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He has also played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, and Nuggets. The Kings will begin their regular season on October 22 against the Phoenix Suns.

BNN's Perspective:

This signing presents an interesting opportunity for both Westbrook and the Kings. While Westbrook's role has evolved, his experience and leadership could be valuable for a team looking to contend in the Western Conference. The Kings are taking a low-risk, high-reward approach, and if Westbrook can contribute effectively, it could be a positive addition to their roster.
