Red Sox Bolster Pitching Staff in Trade with Pirates
The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates, bolstering their pitching depth. In return, the Red Sox are sending outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, minor league right-hander Jesus Travieso, and minor league catcher Adonys Guzman to Pittsburgh. Left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego also joins the Red Sox in the deal.
Garcia, a highly-regarded prospect known as "The Password," was ranked among the Red Sox's top prospects. The 22-year-old outfielder led the Red Sox minor league system in home runs for the past two seasons. He made his MLB debut in late August, appearing in five games.
Oviedo, a five-year MLB veteran, is coming off an injury-plagued season. He underwent Tommy John surgery and suffered a lat strain. Prior to the injury, Oviedo had a breakout season in 2023, making 32 starts and posting a 4.31 ERA. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound pitcher is expected to compete for a rotation spot during spring training.
Samaniego, who was recently added to the Pirates' 40-man roster, will provide the Red Sox with additional left-handed relief depth. Guzman, a recent draft pick, has just one professional game under his belt. Travieso, an 18-year-old right-hander, signed as an international free agent and showed promise in the minor leagues.
The Red Sox designated right-hander Cooper Criswell for assignment to make room for Samaniego on the roster.
BNN's Perspective: This trade appears to be a calculated move by the Red Sox to address their pitching needs while potentially opening up an opportunity for a promising young player in Garcia. The success of this trade will hinge on Oviedo's health and ability to return to his 2023 form.
