Red Hawks baseball takes two from Durango Demons

The Montrose Red Hawks traveled to Durango for a Friday and Saturday set
of baseball games which were won by the Red Hawks 10-5 and 15-0.
In the Friday afternoon game the Red Hawks drew first blood with a run
in the top of the first inning. They followed this with three runs in the
second inning to take a 4-0 lead, which they never relinquished. The
Red Hawks added six more runs in the final three innings, while
allowing five runs to the Demons.
The Red Hawks scored their 10 runs on eight hits. Junior Kortlan
Nelson, senior David Dominguez and senior Torrie Eckerman each had
two hits to lead the Red Hawks attack.
The Red Hawks wore their running shoes, as they stole five bases.
Junior Gage Wareham and Dominguez each had two steals, while senior
Colten Withee had one stolen base.
Right-hander Titus Weese pitched into the seventh inning, giving up five
runs on 10 hits, striking out four to claim the victory. Senior Ryder
Willford got the final two outs, giving up no hits and striking out one to
close out the win.
The Saturday game started slowly with no scoring in the first inning.
The second, third and fourth inning put this one to bed early as the Red
Hawks scored six runs in the second inning. The visitors then added
four runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth inning. The
mercy rule was invoked after the fifth inning, with the final score of 15-0.
Jaxon Kattner led the Red Hawks at the plate, banging out two hits and
driving in three runs. The top three in the batting order, senior Rocco
Manual, senior Jackson Barnett and Wareham each had a base knock. Other hitters included senior Colton Withee, Dominguez and senior Logan Files.
Wareham pitched a complete four inning game to claim the
victory. Wareham gave up no runs on one hit. He walked one
and struck out a pair, cruising to the win.
The sweep of the two-game road trip raised the Red Hawks' season
mark to nine wins and nine losses overall, and three wins and three losses is league action. The Demons dropped to 9-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Up next for the Red Hawks is a trip to Grand Junction on Tuesday, May
2, to take on the Warriors of Grand Junction Central High School. The
Warriors are 9-9 overall and 1-3 in league action. Playoff seedings are
up for grabs as these teams battle it out down the stretch.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
