Record Cold Temperatures Sweep Across Central Alabama
Central Alabama experienced unusually cold temperatures on Wednesday, breaking several daily records. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Birmingham recorded a low of 55 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 58 degrees set in 1968. This is significantly lower than the average low temperature of 70 degrees typically seen during this time of year.
The NWS office in Birmingham shared the record-breaking temperatures on social media, highlighting the widespread chill across the region. Other areas also saw record lows, including Anniston, which tied its 1952 record of 53 degrees, and the Shelby County Airport, which recorded 58 degrees, breaking the 2015 record of 62 degrees.
This cold snap is part of a broader weather pattern affecting the United States. A cold front has brought autumnal conditions to many states, with some areas in the Upper Midwest experiencing frost advisories. Conversely, the Pacific Northwest is grappling with abnormally high temperatures and heat-related warnings.
The NWS anticipates cool weather to persist across much of the central U.S. through the weekend, though further record-breaking lows are not expected. Looking ahead, the NWS Climate Prediction Center forecasts a return to above-average temperatures for most of the country, excluding the Pacific Northwest, between September 6th and September 19th. While the current cool down offers a respite from the summer heat, temperatures are expected to climb again in September.
BNN's Perspective: While the record-breaking cold in Alabama is noteworthy, it's important to remember that this is a localized event within a larger, dynamic weather system. The forecast for a return to warmer temperatures in the coming weeks underscores the seasonal nature of these fluctuations. It serves as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of weather patterns.
