Raiders Mulling Trade Options for Top Draft Pick
Las Vegas Raiders General Manager John Spytek confirmed the team has received inquiries about trading the first overall pick in next week's NFL Draft. Spytek revealed during a press conference that the Raiders have fielded "a few calls" from teams interested in moving up in the draft order.
The Raiders are widely expected to select quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who led Indiana to a national championship. However, Spytek indicated the team is open to considering trade offers if the value is right. He emphasized that if a player stands out as a key piece for the team, the Raiders will decline any trade offers and make the selection. Conversely, if the team is less enthusiastic about a particular player or has a group of players they would be happy to choose from, they will consider a trade.
The Raiders' interest in a quarterback became more apparent after they reached a deal with the New York Jets to reunite them with Geno Smith, who was their starter in 2025 following a prior deal with the Seattle Seahawks. The team also signed Kirk Cousins, who is expected to serve as a mentor to the drafted quarterback. Aidan O'Connell is also on the roster.
The Raiders are under new head coach Klint Kubiak, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Seahawks. The team has also been active in free agency, adding players like Tyler Linderbaum, Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, and Jalen Nailor. The Raiders hold ten picks in the upcoming draft, including the coveted first overall selection, the first time they've had that pick since 2007. Spytek stressed that all players, regardless of their draft position, will need to earn their spot on the roster.
The NFL Draft is scheduled to begin next Thursday.
BNN's Perspective: The Raiders are in a strong position heading into the draft. While the potential to trade the first overall pick for additional assets is always tempting, the team's focus on building a strong foundation through the draft and free agency suggests a commitment to long-term success. The decision to bring in a veteran quarterback like Kirk Cousins to mentor the incoming rookie is a smart move, providing stability and guidance for the future.
