PS5 Outpaces Nintendo Switch 2 in Latest Quarter

In a closely watched battle for console supremacy, Sony's PlayStation 5 has emerged victorious over Nintendo's Switch 2 in the latest quarter. According to Sony's Q3 FY2025 earnings report, the PS5 sold 8 million units in the quarter ending September 30, 2025. This figure surpasses the 7.01 million units sold by the Switch 2 during the same period. This marks the first full quarter of sales for the Switch 2, which launched in June 2025.

The PS5, which has been available since 2020, has now sold over 90 million units globally. The Switch 2, in its initial months on the market, has reached 17.37 million units sold as of the end of 2025.

While Sony enjoyed a stronger quarter overall, the Switch 2 actually outsold the PS5 in the United States during 2025. This highlights the continued strength of Nintendo's brand, particularly in its home market.

The original Nintendo Switch remains a formidable force in the industry, currently the second-best-selling console of all time with 155.37 million units sold. However, Sony's PlayStation 2 continues to hold the top spot, a quarter of a century after its release, with 160 million units sold worldwide.

Looking ahead, Sony's PlayStation 6 is not expected to launch until 2027, potentially giving Nintendo an advantage in the next generation of consoles. Microsoft's Xbox may also delay its next hardware release until 2027.

BNN's Perspective: The console market remains a dynamic and competitive landscape. While Sony's recent performance is impressive, Nintendo's enduring popularity and the Switch 2's strong initial sales demonstrate the continued appeal of its unique approach to gaming. The upcoming generation promises to be exciting, with both companies vying for market share and innovation. The question remains whether any console will ever surpass the enduring success of the PlayStation 2.
