Prime Video Axes "The Wheel of Time" Despite Critical Acclaim for Season 3

Fans of the epic fantasy series "The Wheel of Time" on Prime Video are reeling. Despite the show's third season being hailed as its best yet, Amazon has decided not to renew the series for a fourth season. This decision comes after "lengthy deliberations," according to Deadline, despite the streamer's executives enjoying the programming.

The cancellation is a blow, especially as Season 3's finale left viewers eager for more. The season earned a near-perfect 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest for the series, and was equally popular among audiences. However, the high production costs associated with the fantasy genre, coupled with a decline in viewership during Season 3, ultimately led to the cancellation.

"The Wheel of Time," a co-production between Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios, is an adaptation of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's beloved book series. While the first two seasons faced criticism for deviations from the source material, Season 3 seemed to finally win over the fanbase. The show was a hit in its premiere year, becoming Prime Video's most-watched series premiere of 2021 and one of its top five series launches of all time.

With "The Wheel of Time" gone, Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" prequel series is now the streamer's sole remaining fantasy series in production. "The Rings of Power" has been renewed for a third season, offering fantasy fans something to look forward to.
