Trump to Rebrand Pentagon as Department of War

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order Friday authorizing the Department of Defense to use the secondary title "Department of War." This move, according to a White House official, is part of Trump's ongoing effort to project an image of strength for the U.S. military.

While the president cannot formally change the department's name without congressional approval, the executive order will allow the Pentagon to use the original title. The Department of War was initially established in 1789, the same year the U.S. Constitution took effect, and was renamed the Department of Defense in 1947.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has been a vocal proponent of the name change, having previously discussed it with Trump and even created a social media poll on the topic. Hegseth has also hinted at a potential change in his own title. Trump has stated that the original name reflects a history of victory.

This rebranding is the latest in a series of cultural shifts implemented by Hegseth since assuming office. Earlier in his tenure, Hegseth focused on eliminating what he perceived as the influence of "woke culture" within the military. This included removing diversity programs and reviewing materials deemed divisive from libraries and websites. Hundreds of books, including titles on the Holocaust and a Maya Angelou memoir, were removed. Thousands of websites honoring contributions by women and minority groups were also taken down.

Furthermore, Hegseth has overseen the removal of all transgender troops from the military following a Trump executive order.

BNN's Perspective:

While the symbolic weight of the name change is undeniable, it's important to consider the practical implications. The focus on historical precedent and projecting strength may resonate with some, but it's crucial to ensure that such changes do not undermine the military's ability to adapt to modern challenges and maintain its commitment to inclusivity. A balanced approach that respects tradition while embracing progress is essential.
