PlayStation Portal Receives Major Update with 1080p Mode and UX Enhancements
Sony is bolstering its PlayStation Portal handheld device with a significant software update, introducing a new 1080p High Quality mode and various user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) improvements. The update, currently rolling out globally, aims to enhance the overall gaming experience for Portal users.
The headline feature is the 1080p High Quality mode, accessible during both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming sessions. This mode allows for a higher bitrate, promising smoother frame rates and improved visual fidelity. Players can enable this option within the Quick Menu's Max Resolution settings, though a restart of the Remote Play or Cloud Streaming session is required for the changes to take effect.
Alongside the visual upgrade, the update includes several UX enhancements. Cloud Streaming has received improvements such as better product detail pages, clearer on-screen notifications for game invites and trophy achievements, and an improved search screen. The onboarding experience for new users has also been streamlined, featuring a new QR code-style login option and a more intuitive interface.
The update comes as Sony continues to invest in the Portal's cloud gaming capabilities. Since the introduction of Cloud Streaming in November, the feature's usage has surged. According to Takuro Fushimi, PlayStation's senior manager of product management, monthly cloud streaming users grew by 162% year-over-year as of January. Furthermore, over 50% of Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, indicating growing engagement with the cloud experience.
This update follows previous enhancements to Cloud Streaming, including sorting options and Share button compatibility, which allows for easy screenshotting and video recording. These captures are automatically uploaded to the cloud for 14 days and accessible via the PlayStation App.
Rumors suggest that Sony may be planning a refreshed version of the PlayStation Portal later this year, potentially featuring an OLED display. However, Sony has not yet made any official announcements regarding a new model. In January, reports indicated that two million units of the PlayStation Portal had been sold in the US.
BNN's Perspective:
This update demonstrates Sony's commitment to supporting the PlayStation Portal and its cloud gaming ecosystem. The addition of the 1080p High Quality mode is a welcome improvement for players seeking a more immersive experience. The UX enhancements further refine the user experience, making the Portal a more attractive option for remote and cloud gaming. While the rumored OLED refresh is exciting, this update shows that Sony is actively working to improve the current model, which is a positive sign for the device's future.
