Patriots Bolster Quarterback Depth, Claim DeVito Off Waivers
The New England Patriots have added quarterback Tommy DeVito to their roster, claiming him off waivers on Wednesday. DeVito, formerly of the New York Giants, will now compete for a backup role with the Patriots.
DeVito's arrival comes after the Giants released him on Tuesday as they finalized their 53-man roster. He started eight games for the Giants over the past two seasons. During his time with the Giants, DeVito gained significant attention, particularly during a three-game winning streak in 2023, becoming a popular figure. However, the Giants' offseason acquisitions of Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and rookie Jaxson Dart led to his release.
In his time with the Giants, DeVito averaged 6.1 yards per pass attempt and had a passer rating of 88.4. He will now contend with Josh Dobbs for the backup quarterback position in New England.
The Patriots' decision to add DeVito may have been influenced by his performance in the preseason finale against them, where he completed 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
In addition to DeVito, the Patriots also claimed cornerback Charles Woods on Wednesday. This means the team will need to make room on their 53-man roster by releasing two players.
BNN's Perspective:
While the Patriots' quarterback situation appears settled with Drake Maye, adding DeVito provides valuable depth and competition. This move demonstrates a proactive approach to roster management, ensuring the team is prepared for any potential setbacks. It's a low-risk, potentially high-reward move that could pay dividends if DeVito can develop further within the Patriots' system.
