Patrik Laine to Miss Significant Time Due to Injury
Montreal Canadiens winger Patrik Laine is set to undergo surgery to repair a core muscle injury, sidelining him for an estimated 3-4 months. The announcement comes as the Canadiens prepare to face the Vancouver Canucks. Laine has been out of the lineup since October 16th, and his absence will be felt by the team.
In the five games he played this season, Laine recorded one assist and had a minus-three rating. The timeline for his recovery suggests he could return after the Olympic break, allowing him ample time to fully heal.
This injury adds to a growing list of setbacks for the 27-year-old. Over the past four seasons, Laine has only participated in 181 out of a possible 328 games due to various injuries.
Drafted second overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Winnipeg Jets, Laine made his NHL debut on October 13, 2016, scoring his first career point. During his 4.5 seasons with the Jets, he amassed 250 points in 306 games, including 140 goals and 110 assists. He was then traded to Columbus, where he played for 3.5 seasons, recording 138 points in 174 games. Columbus then traded him to the Canadiens where he has played for the last two seasons, recording 34 points in 57 games.
BNN's Perspective: While Laine's injury history is concerning, his offensive potential remains undeniable. The Canadiens will need to find ways to compensate for his absence, and this could be an opportunity for other players to step up and contribute. The team will need to manage expectations and focus on a consistent performance throughout the season.
