Clarence Girls Lacrosse Soars After Team Breakfast, Prepares for Championship Challenge
Clarence girls lacrosse experienced a remarkable turnaround this season, fueled by a pivotal team meeting in early May. Following a disappointing 1-3 start, coach Cat Vandenburgh organized a pancake breakfast instead of a scheduled practice. The team used the informal setting to discuss their goals and expectations for the remainder of the season.
The meeting proved to be a turning point. The team emerged with a renewed commitment to hard work and a desire for greater success. Since then, Clarence has achieved a 7-2 record, culminating in a Section VI Class B championship victory over Frontier.
This success has set the stage for a challenging regional matchup against Victor, the reigning three-time state champion. The game will be the third consecutive regional meeting between the two teams, with Victor having previously dominated the series. Coach Vandenburgh anticipates a physical game against Victor, emphasizing the need for her team to be prepared for their opponent's fast pace and aggressive style of play.
Despite the upcoming challenge, Vandenburgh is optimistic about the team's future. She highlighted the contributions of key players, including sophomores Ana Wolfson and Avery Ast, and junior Camryn Canetti. Vandenburgh praised the team's dedication and work ethic, emphasizing their commitment to improvement both during and outside of the season.
In other local sports news, Amherst held a college spring signing ceremony, celebrating the achievements of several student-athletes who will be continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Additionally, Hamburg fifth-grader Aria Finnerty has been selected to participate in the Maria Pepe Little League Baseball Legacy Series, a national event honoring the sport.
BNN's Perspective: The Clarence girls lacrosse team's story is a testament to the power of team unity and open communication. While the upcoming game against Victor will be a significant test, the team's recent success demonstrates the positive impact of a shared vision and a commitment to hard work.
