Pakistan Claims Strikes on Indian Military Targets Amid Escalating Tensions
Tensions between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India have reached a new high, with Pakistan claiming it struck military targets inside India on Saturday. According to Pakistani military officials, India launched missiles targeting three air bases within Pakistan, most of which were intercepted. However, the Pakistani military stated that some of the Indian missiles also impacted India's own eastern Punjab region.
The Pakistani army spokesman, Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, addressed the nation on television, assuring the public that the country's air force assets were secure. He identified the targeted air bases as Nur Khan air base in Rawalpindi, Murid air base in Chakwal, and Rafiqui air base in the Jhang district of eastern Punjab. Sharif also claimed that some missiles landed in Afghanistan. He further stated that India fired six ballistic missiles, with one hitting Adampur and the remaining five impacting the Indian Punjab area of Amritsar.
This latest escalation follows a week of heightened tensions, including Pakistan shooting down over two dozen drones. The current crisis is rooted in a recent attack in India-controlled Kashmir, where 26 people, primarily Hindu tourists, were killed. India has blamed Pakistan for the attack, a claim Pakistan denies.
Former US President Donald Trump has offered to mediate, stating, "I want to see them stop." India has yet to release an official comment on the recent events.
BNN's Perspective: The situation is deeply concerning. While both sides are making claims, the potential for miscalculation and further escalation is significant. International pressure for de-escalation and a return to dialogue is crucial to prevent a dangerous conflict. The involvement of external actors, such as the US, could be beneficial in facilitating a peaceful resolution.
