Pakistan Says India Fired Missiles at Air Bases, Retaliation Underway

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated dramatically, with Pakistan claiming India launched missiles at three of its air bases on Saturday. The Pakistani military reported that it used medium-range Fateh missiles to target an Indian missile storage facility and airbases in Pathankot and Udhampur in response.

According to Pakistani officials, the Indian missiles targeted Nur Khan air base in Rawalpindi, Murid air base in Chakwal, and Rafiqui air base in Jhang. While most missiles were intercepted, Pakistani officials stated that some also hit areas in India's eastern Punjab and even crossed into Afghanistan. The Pakistani army spokesman, Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, described the Indian actions as a "provocation of the highest order."

The recent exchange follows a series of escalating events. India blames Pakistan for a massacre last month at a tourist site in Indian-controlled Kashmir, which left 26 civilians dead. India conducted airstrikes on Pakistani territory on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of 31 civilians, according to Pakistani officials. Pakistan claims to have shot down five Indian fighter jets in response. On Thursday, India reported thwarting Pakistani drone and missile attacks, while Pakistan denied any involvement.

Residents in Indian-controlled Kashmir reported hearing loud explosions, with one former police official stating, "It looks like a war here." The situation remains volatile, with both sides claiming to be taking action. India has not yet commented on the latest Pakistani claims.

BNN's Perspective: The situation is deeply concerning. While both sides have a history of conflict, the use of missiles and the targeting of air bases represent a significant escalation. De-escalation and dialogue are urgently needed to prevent further loss of life and a potential wider conflict. International pressure for restraint is crucial.
