Packers to Release Cornerback Jaire Alexander

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander is set to be released today, according to reports from the NFL Network. The move comes after discussions to restructure Alexander's contract, which would have paid him $17.5 million this season, failed to reach an agreement.

Alexander, a first-round draft pick in 2018, has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Over the past four seasons, he missed 34 out of a possible 68 games. He also failed to finish four games due to injuries. In 2023, Alexander was suspended for one game after a coin toss incident.

Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst had previously stated the team was working to find the best solution for both Alexander and the Packers, acknowledging the investment made in the player. Alexander's last game action in 2024 was on November 17, and he finished the season on injured reserve with a knee injury. When asked about his future after the season, Alexander expressed uncertainty.

Alexander was once considered one of the top cornerbacks in the league. He was named to the NFL's All-Rookie team in 2018. In 2019, he tied for fourth in the league with 17 passes defensed and had two interceptions. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the No. 1 cornerback in 2020. However, since then, injuries have plagued his career. He played only four games in 2021 due to a shoulder injury. In 2023, he missed 10 games due to back and shoulder injuries, as well as a suspension. In 2024, he missed 10 games due to quadricep, groin, and a torn posterior cruciate ligament injury.

Without Alexander, the Packers' current top three cornerbacks are Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, and Carrington Valentine.

BNN's Perspective: While Alexander's talent is undeniable, his inability to stay healthy has significantly impacted the Packers. This release allows the team to move forward with a more reliable defensive unit, while also providing Alexander an opportunity to potentially revitalize his career elsewhere. It's a tough decision, but one that appears necessary for both parties at this point.
