Olympic Gymnast Mary Lou Retton Arrested for DUI in West Virginia
Olympic gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) in West Virginia. According to online court records, the 57-year-old was stopped in Marion County on May 17th and charged with one misdemeanor count of DUI. Retton was released the same day after posting a $1,500 bond and has yet to enter a plea. Her attorney, Edmund J. Rollo, declined to comment on the case.
This arrest comes two years after Retton's serious health scare. In 2023, the gold-medal-winning gymnast battled a life-threatening case of pneumonia, requiring a nearly two-week stay in the intensive care unit. In a May 2023 interview, Retton revealed she was still experiencing breathing difficulties and relied on supplemental oxygen. She also expressed frustration about her inability to return to her speaking engagements due to her health.
Retton is best known for her historic performance at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she became the first American to win an Olympic individual all-around gold medal. She also secured two silver and two bronze medals, making her the most decorated athlete of those games. Retton's daughters organized an online fundraiser to help cover her medical bills during her illness, which drew some criticism. Retton defended her daughters' actions, stating they "saved my life." Retton was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997 and competed on "Dancing with the Stars" in 2018.
