Ohtani's Rough Outing in Rockies Matchup

DENVER – Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani experienced a challenging outing in his first career pitching start against the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers ultimately lost the game 8-3.

Ohtani pitched four innings, allowing five earned runs and nine hits. This tied the most earned runs he has given up since July 2022 and matched his career high for hits allowed. During the fourth inning, Ohtani was struck on his right knee by a 93 mph line drive off the bat of Orlando Arcia. He visibly grimaced and limped after the play. Despite the injury, and after a visit from the manager and medical staff, Ohtani remained in the game to finish the inning.

The Dodgers were trailing 5-0 at the time of the injury. Ohtani then drew a walk in his at-bat during the fifth inning. He was later replaced by a pinch hitter in the eighth.

This was Ohtani’s tenth start of the season, following recovery from elbow surgery. Before the game, he had a 3.47 ERA and had not yet recorded a decision. This season, he had not pitched more than four innings or thrown more than 80 pitches. Against the Rockies, he threw 66 pitches, 49 for strikes.

BNN's Perspective: While Ohtani's performance was undoubtedly below his usual standards, it's important to remember he is still returning from a significant injury. This game highlights the challenges of a comeback and the need for patience as he regains his form. The Dodgers will likely monitor his workload carefully to ensure his long-term health and success.
