Tuberculosis Exposure Warning Issued for Chula Vista Charter School

County officials have issued a warning regarding potential tuberculosis (TB) exposure at the Learn4Life charter school's Chula Vista learning center. The exposure period is identified as spanning from June 1, 2025, to September 4, 2025. The county is collaborating with the school, part of the Learn4Life network, to notify individuals at the highest risk of infection and is offering free screenings for certain students and staff.

Learn4Life schools are non-classroom-based, independent-study charter schools. The Chula Vista learning center, which is one of several within the San Diego charter school network, enrolls approximately 430 students. The county's warning follows a series of recent TB exposure alerts in South County schools.

TB is transmitted through the air when an infected person coughs, speaks, sings, or breathes. Prolonged indoor exposure to an infected individual increases the risk of infection. Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss. While most infected individuals do not immediately become ill, latent TB infections can develop into active TB, potentially years later, if left untreated.

Individuals who are immunocompromised or experiencing symptoms are urged to rule out active TB and discuss preventative treatment options. Treatment is available for active TB. Those who test positive but show no symptoms should seek a chest X-ray and consult a medical provider, as treatment in the dormant stage can cure the infection and prevent illness.

BNN's Perspective:

The situation highlights the importance of proactive public health measures. While the exposure period has passed, the county's swift response in offering screenings and providing information is commendable. It underscores the need for vigilance and early detection to prevent the spread of infectious diseases within educational settings.
