Richard E. Thomas Jr., Decorated Veteran and Community Pillar, Dies at 74

Richard E. Thomas Jr., a devoted family man, proud veteran, and dedicated public servant, passed away on July 9, 2026, at the age of 74. His passing followed an aggressive battle with vascular dementia. Born on May 19, 1952, Thomas was known for his passion, dedication, and a distinctive sense of humor that left a lasting impression on those around him.

Thomas served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1972 to 1974. His commitment to service continued throughout his civilian life, notably with a 20-year career at MSAD 49, where he worked from 1998 until his retirement in 2018. Colleagues remember him for his integrity, strong work ethic, and a quick wit that often brought levity to the workplace.

Beyond his professional contributions, Thomas was a deeply involved member of the Maine Masons for over five decades. His affiliation with Bethlehem Lodge #35 in Augusta fostered lifelong friendships and allowed him to contribute to his community through this esteemed organization.

Thomas was predeceased by his wife, Wanda Thomas, with whom he shared a profound connection. He is survived by his sons, Stewart and Walker, and their wives, Megan and Camellia. His legacy of love and laughter continues through his three cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christopher, and Eloise.

His unique personality was marked by a quick wit and a dark sense of humor, qualities that endeared him to many and brought joy to those in his presence. He possessed an uncommon ability to find humor in everyday life, using it to uplift others and demonstrating a resilient spirit.

In his final weeks, Thomas received compassionate care from the staff at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Long Term Care Glenridge and Andwell Hospice care. The family expressed profound gratitude for their unwavering dedication and support.

In accordance with his wishes, a private burial will be held at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta. A celebration of life is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Fairfield VFW, with light refreshments and a cash bar available.

Richard E. Thomas Jr. will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his selfless service to others, and the laughter he so readily shared. His memory will endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
