Obituary: Richard Blackie Joseph Bechard

Richard Blackie Joseph Bechard, a veteran and community leader, passed away on December 24, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on June 15, 1940, he was a graduate of Cony High School.

Bechard dedicated 22 years of his life to the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of Chief. Following his military service, he worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for 17 years.

Beyond his professional life, Bechard was actively involved in numerous organizations. He served two terms as President of Le Club Calumet and was a founding member of Le Festival De Bastille. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW club, the American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge. His community involvement extended to the Cushnoc Senior Citizen Group, where he served as past President, and as a long-time volunteer for the DAV. He was instrumental in supporting the University of Maine French Department and was inducted into the Maine French Hall of Fame.

An avid outdoorsman, Bechard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at the family camp. He also enjoyed visiting casinos.

Bechard was predeceased by his parents, a granddaughter, and several siblings. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 9 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. A private committal service will follow at the Maine Veterans Cemetery.
