Frank E. Southard III, 78, Remembered for His Wit and Craftsmanship
Augusta, Maine – The community mourns the loss of Frank E. Southard III, a beloved figure known for his dry wit, dedication to his family, and passion for woodworking. Southard passed away peacefully at his Augusta home on May 21, 2025, at the age of 78, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Augusta on July 17, 1946, to the late Frank E. Jr. and Charlotte (Fuller) Southard, Frank was a graduate of Kents Hill School (1964) and went on to pursue higher education. He earned a B.A. in English from Ricker College (1970) and a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Maine (1977). His academic journey continued with an M.A. in Anthropology from Memorial University of Newfoundland (1982). His anthropological fieldwork in Port Hope Simpson, Labrador, from 1979 to 1982, inspired his writing, including the book *Salt Cod and God: An Ethnography of Socio-Economic Conditions Affecting Status in a Southern Labrador Community*.
Southard's professional life included teaching English at Cony High School from 1970 to 1976. He later worked for the Maine Department of Human Services and the Department of Labor until his retirement in 2006. He was also actively involved in the Lions Clubs, holding positions as Club President and Zone Chair.
Following his retirement, Frank dedicated himself to cabinet making, creating finely crafted furniture that was showcased in galleries throughout Maine. His work reflected his meticulous attention to detail and artistic talent.
Frank is survived by his wife, Ethel M. (Cunningham) Southard of Augusta; his first wife, Loretta B. (Brotherton) Southard; a son, Benjamin Southard; a daughter, Betsy Southard; and a granddaughter, Izabella Bickford.
