Local Journalist Daniel Robert Simpson Passes Away at 78

Augusta mourns the loss of Daniel Robert Simpson, a respected figure in the community, who passed away unexpectedly on February 14, 2026, at the age of 78. Born in Augusta in 1947, Simpson was a lifelong resident known for his dedication to his community and his sharp wit.

Simpson's early life was marked by a passion for sports. He excelled as an athlete at Cony High School, playing on both the basketball and football teams. His love for basketball continued throughout his life, and he remained active in the sport well into his later years.

After graduating from Boston University with a degree in public relations in 1970, Simpson returned to Augusta and embarked on a career in journalism. He began as a reporter for the Kennebec Journal and later became the state house reporter for a chain of newspapers. In 1982, he transitioned to the Maine State Housing Authority, where he served as Public Information Officer for nearly three decades. During his tenure, he earned numerous national awards for his marketing materials and managed media relations, working with both Democratic and Republican directors. He retired in 2011.

Simpson is remembered as a kind and gentle man with a dry sense of humor. He was known for his intelligence, knowledge, and sensitivity. He was a devoted family man, fiercely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He was also an avid sports fan, particularly of New England teams.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring. The family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Freedom of the Press Foundation.
