NWSL Admits Error in Savy King Game Continuation, Vows Protocol Changes

The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has issued a statement addressing the controversial decision to continue the match between Angel City FC and Utah Royals FC after defender Savy King collapsed on the field. The league acknowledged the widespread criticism, including strong disapproval from the NWSL Players Association, players, and fans, admitting the game should have been stopped.

In a statement released to ESPN, the NWSL stated, "Having reviewed our protocols and how they were implemented, and in listening to feedback from our stakeholders, the Angel City vs. Utah game [on May 9] should not have continued." The league emphasized that player health and safety are its top priority and that in similar future situations, the game "should and would be abandoned."

The NWSL Players Association welcomed the league's admission and commitment to revised protocols, highlighting the importance of player unity in achieving this change. Interim Angel City head coach Sam Laity expressed relief over King's successful heart surgery and a positive prognosis, while also agreeing with the league's decision to change how similar situations are handled.

The incident occurred during the 74th minute of the game when King collapsed and received medical attention. Players from both teams were visibly shaken, yet the game continued, with Angel City ultimately winning 2-0. King, the second overall pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft, underwent heart surgery after an abnormality was discovered. She is currently recovering well.
