The Field Returns with a New Sound on "Now You Exist" EP

After an eight-year hiatus, Axel Wilner, the artist known as The Field, has released a new EP titled "Now You Exist." This marks a significant shift in his sound, moving away from the clinical techno beats that defined his earlier work. The EP, released on Studio Barnhus instead of his usual label, Kompakt, showcases a looser and more relaxed approach.

The most notable change is evident in the percussion. While his earlier records featured stiff rhythms, often obscured by haze, the drums on "Now You Exist" are more limber. This shift gives the project a fresh energy, with tracks like "Hey Baby" incorporating rough and tumble percussion reminiscent of mid-80s Chicago house records. The music swells and recedes, creating a more earthly feel, a departure from the celestial soundscapes of his past. The sound design and looping also feel rougher, adding a new dimension to his familiar techniques.

The EP's most striking track, "Another Day," draws inspiration from Wolfgang Voigt's "Lifes a Gas." This track features weepy strings and a fully fledged vocal performance, a relative rarity in Wilner's work. The lyrics add an explicit emotional depth to his usually implicit feelings.
