No changes in World Championships boxing squad for now: High Court

NEW DELHI: Indias 12-member squad for the upcoming IBA womens World Championships will remain unchanged for now. The Delhi high court, hearing the petition filed by aggrieved boxers Manju Rani (48kg), Shiksha Narwal (54kg) and Poonam Poonia (60kg) over their non-inclusion in the team, didnt provide any immediate relief to the trio on Tuesday after listening to the counsels of both sides Sandeep Lamba appearing on behalf of the boxers and advocates Hrishikesh Baruah and Parth Goswami for the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).The court didnt interfere with the selection process for the Worlds and further listed the matter for hearing on Monday, two days ahead of the commencement of the tournament here from March 15. However, the court directed the BFI to include the names of three boxers as reserves for the Worlds while ordering it to place on record the procedure adopted for the evaluation test at the nearly three-week long national camp at NIS Patiala from January 20 to February 8. It was formed as part of the selection criteria to pick the squad. The matter was heard by a single-judge bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh in Court No. 43.According to BFI, its counsels informed the court that the federation followed a selection policy and, after the inclusion in the national camp, the boxers were evaluated on various parameters by high-performance director Bernard Dunne and national coaches CA Kuttappa and Bhaskar Chandra Bhatt. The counsels argued that the selection was done without any bias and the team was picked after carefully evaluating players performances at the camp.
