Nirvana's "Come As You Are" Reaches Global Charts, Joining Iconic Hits
Seattle-based grunge pioneers Nirvana are experiencing a resurgence on the global music charts, decades after their initial rise to fame. This week, the band's classic track "Come As You Are" has debuted on the Billboard Global 200, a ranking of the 200 most-consumed songs worldwide. The song enters the chart at No. 200, marking a new milestone for the band.
"Come As You Are" joins the ranks of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Something in the Way" as the only Nirvana tracks to have achieved success on the Billboard Global 200. The band's limited number of chart entries is notable, considering their significant impact on the music industry and the millions of records they sold during their brief time together.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the first Nirvana song to appear on the Billboard Global 200, debuting in January 2021. The song has since peaked at No. 92 and spent 178 weeks on the chart. "Something in the Way" followed in March 2022, reaching a peak position of No. 23, which remains Nirvana's highest placement on the chart.
The Billboard Global 200, introduced by Billboard, has provided a new platform for measuring global music consumption. The Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, which excludes American streams and sales, has seen appearances from "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Something in the Way," but "Come As You Are" has yet to appear on that specific chart.
"Come As You Are" was originally released in the spring of 1992 as the second single from Nirvana's seminal album, *Nevermind*. The album, a cornerstone of rock history, also features other iconic tracks like "Lithium" and "In Bloom."
BNN's Perspective:
While it's surprising that a band as influential as Nirvana has only a few songs on the global charts, this recent success demonstrates the enduring power of their music. The continued popularity of these tracks, decades after their release, speaks to the lasting impact of Nirvana's artistry and their ability to connect with new generations of listeners.
