NHS teams finish first and second at meet in Douglas

The Nogales High School boys track and field team finished first and the NHS girls were second at the Ted James Invitational last weekend in Douglas.
The boys tallied 161.2 points to finish atop the field of 11 schools, well ahead of second-place Safford, which had 106.5 points. The girls were just one point back of Safford, which won the 10-school girls competition with 138 points.
Girls top-five finishers from Nogales High included:
100 meters: Carolina Renteria, third, 13.69.
400 meters: Natalia Guzman, fifth, 1:06.98.
800 meters: Elizabeth Fuentes, third, 2:51.43; Camilla Guzman, fourth, 2:51.68.
1600 meters: Elizabeth Fuentes, third, 6:29.59.
3200 meters: Mariana Montoya, third, 18:13.18; Isabella Jimenez, fourth, 18:15.22; Camilla Guzman, fifth, 20:36.95.
100 meter hurdles: Brianna Morgan, second, 18.53; Johanna Simpson, third, 18.65.
300 meter hurdles: Brianna Morgan, first, 50.13.
4x100 relay: Nogales, first, 52.86.
4x400 relay: Nogales, first, 4:29.83.
4x800 relay: Nogales, second, 12:24.39.
High jump: Erin Montano, fifth, 4-06.
Long jump: Carolina Renteria, second, 14-08.
NHS boys athletes who finished in the top five were:
100 meters: Parker Jeong, third, 12:07; Arturo Alvarez, fourth, 12:10.
400 meters: Shahean Simon, first, 51.80.
800 meters: Alec Guerra, second, 2:07.62; Joel Martinez, fourth, 2:16.47.
1600 meters: Jorge Felix, first, 4:45.41; Santiago Aguilar, fifth, 5:19.28.
3200 meters: Jorge Felix, first 10:40.63; Santiago Aguilar, fourth, 12:20.12; Cristian Olivares, fifth, 12:28.38.
100 meter hurdles: Santos Verdugo, third, 19.30.
300 meter hurdles: Santos Verdugo, first, 45.44.
4x100 relay: Nogales, first, 45.56.

In their first home meet of the year on March 1, the Nogales girls and boys teams each finished first in a three-team competition with Rio Rico and Sunnyside. The NHS squads will compete at a multi-team meet on March 22 at Rio Rico, and host their second and final home meet of the year against Rio Rico, Sahuarita and Walden Grove on April 12.
