New Dr. Seuss Book Featuring Cat in the Hat to Debut in 2026
NEW YORK (AP) – A previously unknown manuscript by Dr. Seuss, featuring the iconic Cat in the Hat, is slated for publication in 2026, coinciding with the United States' 250th anniversary. Titled "Sing the 50 United States," the book aims to educate young readers about the names of the states.
This marks the first complete manuscript by Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, to be discovered since the 2015 release of "What Pet Should I Get?" The manuscript was unearthed earlier this year within archival materials held at the Geisel Library at the University of California, San Diego. The discovery included a cover sketch and notes on art direction from Geisel himself.
The book will feature new illustrations by artist Tom Brannon, created in the distinctive style of Dr. Seuss. Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, described the finding as akin to discovering a "time capsule" of Geisel's imagination, highlighting his creative genius and ability to inspire young readers.
Random House Children's Books will publish "Sing the 50 United States" on June 2, 2026, with an initial print run of 500,000 copies. The book promises to be a celebration of the author's enduring legacy and a fitting tribute during a significant historical milestone for the nation.
BNN's Perspective: The release of a new Dr. Seuss book is always a welcome event, particularly one that aims to educate children in a fun and engaging way. While some may debate the commercialization of an author's legacy, the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Dr. Seuss's unique style and educational content is a positive development. The timing of the release, coinciding with the nation's 250th anniversary, adds a layer of significance, potentially fostering a sense of national pride and understanding among young readers.
