Netflix Abruptly Removes Phone Casting Feature for Most Users

Netflix subscribers are reporting the abrupt removal of the ability to cast shows and movies from their mobile phones to their televisions. The change, which appears to have rolled out in recent weeks, has left many users unable to stream content directly from their phones to their TVs, forcing them to rely on their TV remotes.

The streaming giant's updated support page now directs users to navigate Netflix using their TV's remote control. This change affects most users, as the casting feature is no longer supported for the majority of TVs and streaming devices.

However, some users are still able to cast. Casting remains functional for those using older Chromecast devices or TVs with native Google Cast support. This functionality, however, is now limited to subscribers on the more expensive, ad-free subscription plans, which start at $17.99 per month. Subscribers on the ad-supported plan, priced at $7.99 per month, are unable to cast from their phones, even if they own legacy Chromecast devices.

The company has not provided a public explanation for the removal of the casting feature. This move mirrors a similar decision in 2019 when Netflix removed AirPlay support, citing a desire to maintain viewing quality standards. The lack of prior warning has frustrated many users who have come to rely on the phone casting feature for their viewing experience. BNN has reached out to Netflix for comment.

BNN's Perspective: This move by Netflix is likely to be met with mixed reactions. While some users may not be affected, the removal of a convenient feature like phone casting, particularly for those on the more affordable ad-supported plan, could be seen as a step backward in user experience. The lack of clear communication from Netflix regarding the change is also concerning. Transparency with subscribers is crucial, especially when altering core functionalities of the service.
