Netflix Announces Another Round of Price Hikes

Netflix subscribers are facing another round of price increases, effective immediately. The streaming giant has updated its website to reflect the changes across all three of its subscription tiers.

The "Standard with ads" plan, which includes advertisements, will now cost $8.99 per month, up from $7.99. The "Standard" plan, offering ad-free viewing on two devices simultaneously, is increasing to $19.99 per month, from $17.99. The "Premium" plan, which provides ad-free streaming on up to four devices with Ultra HD and HDR quality, will now cost $26.99 per month, up from $24.99.

These price hikes come just two months after Netflix reported adding 23 million new subscribers over the past year. This marks a continuation of a trend, with previous price increases occurring in January 2025, 2023, and 2022. In 2024, Netflix eliminated its Basic plan.

The company was involved in a bidding war last December, pledging $82.7 billion to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery. While Netflix initially assured subscribers that "nothing is changing," it later withdrew from the bidding, allowing Paramount to acquire the company.

Despite these price increases and other changes, Netflix has demonstrated resilience. Last year's full-year earnings showed $45.2 billion in revenue, a 16% year-over-year increase, and a total of 325 million subscribers. The success of popular titles like "KPop Demon Hunters," "Bridgerton," and "One Piece" has contributed to the platform's continued growth.

BNN's Perspective: While these price increases are undoubtedly frustrating for consumers, Netflix's consistent subscriber growth and revenue demonstrate its ability to navigate the competitive streaming landscape. The company's investment in popular content appears to be a key factor in its continued success, even as it adjusts its pricing structure.
