Late Spring Nor'easter to Soak New England with Heavy Rain and Strong Winds
Get ready for a soggy day, New England! A late spring Nor'easter is brewing just south of the region, promising a day of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential coastal flooding.
The storm, developing off the coast, will bring widespread showers this morning, intensifying by midday. Expect steady rain across most towns and cities, with downpours expected this afternoon. These intense bursts could lead to significant puddles and standing water in areas with poor drainage. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 1-2 inches across the region, with localized pockets potentially receiving 2-3 inches.
Accompanying the rain will be strong northeast winds, peaking this afternoon and evening. Inland areas can expect gusts of 25-40 mph, while coastal areas face gusts of 40-55 mph. Cape Ann and Cape Cod are particularly vulnerable, with the strongest winds expected near the National Seashore. This could lead to isolated tree damage and power outages.
The strong winds will also push ocean water towards the coast, raising concerns about minor coastal flooding around the high tide, expected around 8 pm this evening. Vulnerable nearshore roads may experience inundation.
The weather will gradually improve over the weekend. Scattered showers will linger into tomorrow morning, with a drier afternoon expected. Another patch of showers is possible tomorrow night into Saturday morning, but Saturday afternoon should be drier. Sunday and Monday will see further improvements, with Memorial Day looking milder, although isolated pop-up showers are still possible.
BNN's Perspective: This Nor'easter serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of spring weather. While the heavy rain and strong winds will undoubtedly cause some inconvenience, it's important to remember that these storms are a natural part of the region's climate. Residents should take necessary precautions, but the forecast suggests the worst of the weather will be relatively short-lived, with a gradual improvement expected over the holiday weekend.
