Manhunt Underway After Eight Inmates Escape Louisiana Jail
A large-scale manhunt is underway in Louisiana following the escape of eight inmates from the Riverbend Detention Center early Friday morning. Louisiana State Police confirmed the escape, noting that the group, all classified as violent offenders, were discovered missing at approximately 1:20 a.m. local time.
Of the eight escapees, three have been apprehended. The remaining five fugitives are: Destin Brogan, Kelin Looney, Krisean Salinas, Kevin Slaughter, and Koplelon Vicknair. Authorities have not released details on how the inmates managed to escape.
The three inmates who were captured were identified as Hugo Molino, Trenton Taplin, and Savon Wheeler.
The Louisiana State Police Detectives Monroe Field Office has taken the lead in the investigation, at the request of the East Carroll Parish Sheriff's Office. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has offered the full assistance of her office, including the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, and is actively monitoring the situation.
Authorities have issued a warning to the public, urging them not to approach the escapees under any circumstances. Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts is urged to contact law enforcement immediately.
Local news outlets have reported that some of the escapees are facing serious charges. Taplin is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder, while Brogan and Looney are facing second-degree murder charges. Vicknair was reportedly awaiting sentencing related to a 2023 homicide.
BNN's Perspective: The escape of multiple inmates, particularly those facing serious charges, is a serious matter. While the swift response from law enforcement and the involvement of the Attorney General are encouraging, the lack of information regarding the escape method raises concerns about security protocols. The focus now must be on apprehending the remaining fugitives and conducting a thorough investigation to prevent future incidents.
