Mormon Leader Jeffrey R. Holland Dies at 85

Salt Lake City, Utah – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) announced the passing of Jeffrey R. Holland, a prominent leader within the church. Holland, 85, died on Saturday at approximately 3:15 a.m. MST due to complications from kidney disease. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death.

Holland served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a key governing body within the LDS Church, since June 1994. Before this role, he was a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy, overseeing church operations in designated regions, beginning in April 1989.

Born on December 3, 1940, Holland held a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in religious education from Brigham Young University (BYU). He later earned a second master's degree and a PhD in American studies from Yale University. His career included a significant tenure as president of BYU from 1980 to 1989. He also served as commissioner of the Church Educational System and dean of Religious Education at BYU.

Holland's health had been a concern in recent years. In April 2023, he was excused from church duties due to coronavirus and a kidney condition requiring dialysis. He was hospitalized again in August for ongoing health complications. Holland's wife, Patricia Terry Holland, passed away in July 2023. He is survived by his three children, 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

BNN's Perspective:

The passing of Elder Holland marks the end of an era for the LDS Church. His long service and influence within the church, as well as his contributions to higher education, leave a significant legacy. While his views were often considered conservative, his commitment to his faith and his community is undeniable. His death is a loss felt by many.
