More Snow on the Way as Boston Endures a Brutally Cold Winter
Boston residents are bracing for another round of snowfall as the city continues to grapple with a particularly harsh winter. The period from December 1st to February 9th has seen average temperatures of 28.6 degrees, tying with the 2003-2004 winter for the coldest in recent history. The last time the city experienced a colder stretch during this timeframe was the winter of 1993-1994.
Adding to the frigid temperatures, the region has also been blanketed with 2-3 feet of snow since late January. This combination of cold and heavy snowfall has created both opportunities and challenges. While winter sports enthusiasts are enjoying ideal conditions for activities like skiing, sledding, and ice skating, the weather has also presented difficulties. Residents are dealing with issues such as ice dams on roofs and reduced visibility due to towering snow piles along roadways.
The latest snowfall is expected to arrive later today, impacting the evening commute. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated this evening, with most of the precipitation ending by 2 a.m. Forecasts predict widespread accumulation of 2-3 inches, with potentially higher totals in Northeast Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Northern areas, including Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, are expected to receive several inches of snow.
Following the snowfall, the weather is expected to be relatively quiet for several days. Temperatures will be near average tomorrow, followed by slightly below-average temperatures later in the week and into the weekend. While the cold will persist, it is not expected to reach the extreme Arctic temperatures experienced earlier this winter. The weekend is expected to offer favorable conditions for winter sports.
BNN's Perspective:
While the ongoing winter weather presents challenges, it's important to recognize the resilience of the community. The city and its residents have adapted to the conditions, and the forecast suggests a break from the most extreme cold. It's a reminder of the importance of preparedness and community spirit during challenging weather events.
