California Baby Believed Dead, Parents Arrested in Connection

Authorities are now working to recover the remains of Emmanuel Haro, a 7-month-old baby who was reported missing. The parents, Rebecca Haro, 41, and Jake Haro, 32, were arrested on Friday morning on suspicion of murder.

Rebecca initially told authorities that she had taken Emmanuel to a sporting goods store to buy a mouthguard for their older son. While changing the baby's diaper in the car, she claimed a stranger attacked her and took the baby. She reported waking up with a black eye and Emmanuel was missing.

As the investigation progressed, detectives found inconsistencies in Rebecca's statement, and she stopped cooperating with authorities. The child's grandmother stated that investigators asked Rebecca to take a lie detector test, but Jake refused until a lawyer was present.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department could not rule out foul play in the disappearance. Search warrants were executed at the parents' home, and cadaver dogs were used to search the property. Jake's vehicle was taken as evidence, and authorities reviewed surveillance video and digital evidence, including text messages and computer data.

A possible sighting of the baby was reported, but the child was not found. Based on the evidence, authorities determined that a kidnapping did not occur. On August 22, Rebecca and Jake were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into jail without bail. A 2-year-old child was also removed from the couple's home by social workers. Court records show that Jake was convicted of willful child cruelty in June 2023.

The Uvalde Foundation for Kids, which had offered a reward for information, canceled its search due to concerns about inconsistencies in the details. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is continuing its efforts to locate Emmanuel.
