Michael Che Criticizes Racist Jokes at Kevin Hart Roast
Comedian Michael Che has publicly criticized the jokes made during Kevin Hart's recent celebrity roast, which aired on Netflix. Che, who was unable to attend the event due to scheduling conflicts, took issue with the nature of the humor employed by several comedians, particularly the use of racist tropes.
The roast, a three-hour event featuring Hart's friends and fellow comedians, saw a number of jokes that Che found problematic. Host Shane Gillis, along with Jeff Ross and Tony Hinchcliffe, delivered jokes that Che and others considered racially insensitive. These included comparisons of Hart to a monkey, references to his absentee father, and jokes about the Black community. Even Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson joined in, making a comment about Hart's appearance.
Che, in a social media post, highlighted the difference between the types of jokes made by white and Black comedians. He noted that while Black comedians often joke about everyday experiences, the white comedians at the roast relied heavily on race-based humor, including references to slavery, stereotypes, and slurs. Che's critique underscores the contrast between the jokes made by white comedians and those made by Black comedians, as well as the lack of interjection from Hart himself.
The roast also featured jokes from other comedians, including Sheryl Underwood, Regina Hall, Usher, and Lizzo. These comedians, however, did not rely on racist stereotypes in their jokes.
BNN's Perspective:
While roasts are known for their edgy humor, the reliance on racist jokes at Kevin Hart's roast raises valid concerns. The event highlighted a disparity in comedic approaches and the potential for jokes to cross the line into offensive territory. While the intention may have been to be funny, the use of outdated stereotypes and insensitive references ultimately detracted from the humor and raised questions about the boundaries of comedy.
