Miami Hurricanes Bolster Offensive Line with JUCO Tackle
The Miami Hurricanes football program has secured a commitment from junior college offensive tackle Jacob Hawks, a 6-foot-9, 320-pound lineman from Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Hawks, a native of Topeka, Kansas, played left tackle for Hutchinson during their recent season, contributing to an 11-1 record and a runner-up finish in the junior college national championship.
Hawks played a key role in an offense that averaged nearly 378 yards per game, including over 170 rushing yards and 206 passing yards, while scoring almost 40 points per game. His performance was particularly important in the run game.
Despite not being highly ranked by major recruiting services, Hawks is academically qualified and eligible to enroll at Miami this summer. He will have three years of eligibility remaining, with the possibility of a redshirt season.
Hawks' arrival is timely for the Hurricanes, who are rebuilding their offensive line. The team is undergoing a complete overhaul after losing all five starters from the previous season. The previous unit was a key factor in their run to the College Football Playoff national championship game.
As spring practice concludes, the Hurricanes' projected offensive line includes Jackson Cantwell and Matt McCoy at tackle, Samson Okunlola at left guard, Ryan Rodriguez at center, and Max Buchanan competing at right guard. Hawks joins a group that also features transfers and underclassmen.
Hawks is expected to compete for immediate playing time at tackle. His size, experience, and production at the junior college level make him a potential contributor for the Hurricanes' season opener against Stanford on September 4.
BNN's Perspective: The addition of Jacob Hawks is a smart move for Miami. While the Hurricanes are rebuilding, Hawks' experience and size provide a much-needed boost to the offensive line. His ability to contribute immediately could be crucial for the team's success this season. The coaching staff will need to integrate him quickly, but the potential payoff is significant.
