Mexican Navy Crew Members Die in Brooklyn Bridge Crash, President Mourns
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is mourning the tragic loss of two crew members from the Mexican Navy's tall ship, the Cuauhtémoc, after it collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night. The accident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m., resulted in the deaths of two crew members who were on the ship's masts when they crashed into the bridge.
President Sheinbaum expressed her deep sadness on X (formerly Twitter), offering condolences to the families of the deceased. She also confirmed that at least 17 people were injured in the collision and are receiving medical attention with the support of New York City officials. The Mexican Navy is providing assistance to the injured as well.
The Cuauhtémoc, a training ship with a crew of 277, primarily cadets, was in New York City as part of a promotional tour for next year's Sail4th tall ship event. The ship's 147-foot masts struck the bridge, causing significant damage. The Brooklyn Bridge itself, however, sustained no structural damage and was reopened to the public late Saturday.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also expressed his condolences and gratitude to first responders who quickly assisted the injured. The ship is currently docked in the water while emergency responders work to care for the wounded. The vessel, built in Spain in 1982, is on an eight-month global voyage, offering cadets training opportunities in various locations. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation.
