Rite Aid to Shutter All Remaining Stores Amid Bankruptcy

Rite Aid, a once-dominant pharmacy chain, is preparing to close all its remaining stores across the U.S. as part of its ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. This move signifies a dramatic downsizing for the company, which once boasted over 4,500 locations. Liquidation sales and prescription transfers to competitors are already underway.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023, citing mounting financial difficulties, including a heavy debt burden and legal liabilities related to the opioid crisis. CEO Matt Schroeder has stated the company is prioritizing uninterrupted pharmacy services and job preservation. The company's leadership determined that selling or liquidating the stores would be the most effective strategy to maximize creditor repayment.

While the initial plan targeted 47 closures, the list has expanded to include 68 more stores across nine states, pending court approval. The complete winding down of all operations is expected by mid-2025. Rite Aid is currently operating stores temporarily while seeking buyers and managing the liquidation process.

The closures will leave a significant gap in pharmaceutical access, particularly in states with a strong Rite Aid presence, such as California, Pennsylvania, and New York. Neither Walgreens nor CVS plans to acquire the remaining Rite Aid stores. The bankruptcy court will oversee the piecemeal asset sales.

Closures are happening in waves, with some stores already closed and others slated to shut down by early summer. Pennsylvania has the most closures in the latest round, with 44 pharmacies closing. Customers are advised to transfer prescriptions immediately. Rite Aid Rewards points are no longer being issued, and gift cards and returns will not be honored after June 5, 2025.

BNN's Perspective: The demise of Rite Aid highlights the challenges facing traditional brick-and-mortar retail, especially in the face of changing consumer habits and increased competition from larger pharmacy chains and online retailers. The opioid crisis has also significantly impacted the company's financial stability.
