Ambient Musician Lucy Liyou Announces New Album "Mr Cobra"
California-based ambient musician and sound artist Lucy Liyou is set to release a new album, "Mr Cobra," on April 17th via Orange Milk. The album is inspired by Liyou's semi-autobiographical theatrical work, "Mister Cobra," which will debut at Performance Space New York on March 28th.
"Mr Cobra" is a revisionist retelling of a period in Liyou's high school years when she fell in love with a predator. The album, written, recorded, and produced entirely by Liyou, explores themes of shame, including anger, disappointment, and dark humor, across its 12 tracks. Liyou aims to create a "gross, important, and unimportant spectacle" with the album, inviting listeners to laugh both at and with her.
The artist drew inspiration from various sources, including Cecil Taylor's Unit Structures, drag performances, and the works of Ryan Trecartin and Sunik Kim. Liyou sought to capture a sense of "faulty rawness" and "frenzy" in the music, aiming for a disembodying experience.
Fans can now listen to two new songs from the album, "Yoohoo (An Overture)" and "Babygirl." "Mr Cobra" follows Liyou's 2025 album, "Every Video Without Your Face, Every Sound Without Your Name."
BNN's Perspective:
The artist's willingness to confront difficult personal experiences through art is commendable. The exploration of complex emotions like shame, anger, and dark humor, particularly within the context of a personal trauma, can resonate with listeners. The use of ambient music to convey these themes offers a unique and potentially powerful artistic approach.
