PSG Crowned Ligue 1 Champions for Fifth Consecutive Season
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has secured its fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title, extending its record to 14 French league titles overall. The team clinched the championship with a 2-0 victory over Lens on Wednesday. PSG needed only a draw to secure the title and now leads Lens by nine points with one game remaining.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 29th minute, followed by a goal from Ibrahim Mbaye in stoppage time. The match was rescheduled from April 11 to aid PSG's Champions League ambitions. Lens, who had a strong season, missed several scoring opportunities, with goalkeeper Matvei Safonov making crucial saves.
Lens coach Pierre Sage left key players, Florian Thauvin and Allan Saint-Maximin, on the bench until the hour mark. Lens also has a French Cup final to prepare for against Nice on May 22.
PSG's victory was a result of clinical finishing, capitalizing on a defensive error by Lens. Mbaye's goal came after Lens missed several chances. Lens's striker, Wesley Sad, missed a header, and Abdallah Sima had a shot saved.
PSG coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the difficulty of the match, praising Safonov's performance. Lens's coach, Pierre Sage, expressed disappointment, stating his team deserved at least a draw.
PSG will now focus on the Champions League final against Arsenal on May 30 in Budapest. The last team to prevent PSG from winning the title was Lille in 2021.
In a separate match, Strasbourg defeated Brest 2-1.
BNN's Perspective: PSG's continued dominance in Ligue 1 is a testament to their financial strength and squad depth. While their domestic success is undeniable, the focus will now be on their performance in the Champions League, where they aim to finally achieve European glory.
