Nintendo Legend Takashi Tezuka to Retire After Four Decades
Nintendo is preparing to bid farewell to another of its veteran game developers. Takashi Tezuka, a key figure in the creation of some of the company's most beloved franchises, is set to retire on June 26th. The announcement was made during Nintendo's latest investor briefing.
Tezuka's career at Nintendo spans over four decades, beginning in 1984 as a part-time employee. He quickly became an integral part of the development team, collaborating frequently with Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario. Tezuka's contributions are extensive, including roles as designer, director, and producer on numerous iconic titles. He served as assistant director and designer on the original *Super Mario Bros.* in 1985. He then directed the first *The Legend of Zelda* game and went on to helm *Super Mario Bros. 3* and *Super Mario World*, where he helped create the character Yoshi.
Throughout his career, Tezuka worked on a wide range of games, including *Super Mario 64*, and titles in the *Pikmin* and *Animal Crossing* franchises. More recently, he has been involved as a producer or production supervisor on major releases such as *Super Mario Maker*, *Super Mario 3D World*, and *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*.
Tezuka's retirement, at the age of 65, follows the recent departures of other long-term Nintendo employees, including Hideki Konno and Kensuke Tanabe. Shigeru Miyamoto, now 73, remains at the company, though he has taken a less hands-on role in recent years, focusing on Nintendo's ventures into movies and theme parks.
BNN's Perspective:
The departure of key figures like Tezuka marks a significant shift for Nintendo. While the loss of experience is undeniable, it also presents an opportunity for new talent to step up and shape the future of these beloved franchises. Nintendo's continued success will depend on its ability to maintain the creative spirit and innovation that has defined its legacy.
