Kermit the Frog Delivers Inspiring Commencement Speech at University of Maryland
The University of Maryland's graduating class of 2025 received a unique commencement address this week: a speech delivered by none other than Kermit the Frog! The beloved Muppet, voiced by Matt Vogel, took the stage to offer words of wisdom and encouragement to the graduates.
The choice of Kermit, a creation of the late Jim Henson, was a deliberate one. The university aimed to honor Henson's legacy, who passed away in 1990. Kermit acknowledged Henson's profound influence, stating that Henson "had a hand in literally everything I did."
The announcement of Kermit's speech, dubbed the "Ker-mencement" by some students, sparked mixed reactions. Some questioned whether the university was attempting to avoid addressing pressing issues facing higher education, such as funding cuts and visa restrictions.
However, Kermit's speech focused on themes of collaboration, community, and embracing life's "ensemble piece." He shared advice drawn from his experiences, including the importance of sharing life with the right people, even a "spotlight-hogging pig" (Miss Piggy, who was notably absent, enjoying a summer vacation).
Kermit emphasized the power of unity, urging graduates to support each other. "Life is better when we leap together," he declared. This wasn't Kermit's first foray into public speaking; he previously delivered a commencement address in 1996. His Sesame Street friends, like Grover and Cookie Monster, have also shared their wisdom with graduating classes. The speech offered a lighthearted yet meaningful message of hope and togetherness for the Class of 2025.
